Heartburn Foods: Tips
By
There are many ways how to avoid heartburn. Foods, for example, should be a part of your preventive plan if you want to lessen your heartburn attacks. Like other conditions, heartburn can be prevented if you eat the right foods that do not cause heartburn, and avoid the ones that worsen your condition.
So what are the foods that cause heartburn?
Generally, these foods are either acidic or hard to digest. These are the ones that often cause the digestive system to produce much acids in the body to churn the food you eat. So, here are just some of the food groups you should avoid if you want to avoid heartburn:
– Chocolate
– Coffee
– Spearmint and peppermint
– Alcoholic drinks
– Fruit juices like orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice
– Ground beef, chuck
– Marbled sirloin
– Chicken nuggets
– Buffalo wings
– Dairy products such as sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cottage cheese
– Macaroni and cheese
– Spaghetti with sauce
– Tea
– Fatty foods and fried foods
– Onions
– Citrus fruits
– Spicy foods
– Products which are tomato-based
– Caffeinated drinks
– Spices such as garlic, onions, red or black pepper and chili powder
– Baked food high in fat like butter cookies, brownies, doughnuts,
– Junk foods like corn chips and regular potato chips
On the other hand, here are some of the safe foods for heartburn, and should be a part of your heartburn-free diet:
– Food rich in complex carbohydrates like bread, cereal, graham crackers, pretzels
– Apples, either the pulp or the juice
– Banana
– Baked potato
– Green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots
– Legumes and lentils like green beans and peas
– Meat low in fat like extra-lean ground beef and skinless chicken breast
– Egg whites
– Fish without added fat
– Low-fat dairy products
– Low-fat salad dressings and desserts

Any tips on foods that DON’T give you heartburn?
I’m 33 weeks and my heartburn is getting nasty. I take tums/maalox etc but it’s not totally helping. I know I could take Zantac or something but I’d first like to try and change my diet a bit.
Anyway, I was wondering what types of foods (if any) gave you LESS heartburn? I’m looking for some meals to make that won’t make my chest feel on fire.
Yeah. I love spicy food, Italian food and my number one craving is JUICE! lol. Seems like everything I should avoid I like!
TTC #3 – yeah, WATER causes it in me too.

Avoid anything spicy or high in cholesterol. I’m not exactly sure on specific meals to avoid it though.
Edit-i had bad heartburn with my second, and he was born bald. I ate alot of nachos with him, so thats probably why i got the heartburn. I got no heartburn with my third, and he had a head full of hair.

Eat stuff as plain as you can! No spices or seasonings at all. Also, try eating smaller meals.
At the end of my pregnancy, I had the worst heartburn. I was living on Tums. I learned to avoid chocolate and anything even remotely seasoned.
I bet your baby is going to have a lot of hair! My boy was born with a thick head of dark hair.

Pretty much everything gives me heartburn at this point (36 weeks) but I’ve found that if I eat very small meals, but more frequently, and drink milk before the meal, that helps a bit. Plus, I pop Tums constantly. Blah.

My grandmother suggested to me that she took a bite of ‘milk of magnesia’ whenever she was having heartburn and it went away completely. I think there is a liquid form too, but I hear it tastes bad.
As far as foods, avoid anything spicy. Do not eat an hour before laying down. Don’t eat big meals, eat a lot of smaller ones. Milk, whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables will not cause heartburn.

Omg! I feel your pain. I’m 29 weeks and my esophagus is ripped apart by heart burn I find that if I drink Milk with my dinner or whatever I eat that it isn’t AS bad. It coats your throat and makes it feel better.
with my 1st pregnancy I went thru so many tums…tum AND milk might help you out.
Take it from the girl who is craving buffalo pizza day and night!! lol

Oh my gosh I had heartburn so bad with my son, in my last trimester I would wake up in the middle of the night and throw up nightly because of it. Good news is that it went away the second I gave birth. Also, he was bald so I don’t believe the hair thing.
I couldn’t even drink water without getting heartburn. Or eat any veggies, including lettuce. It was horrible. My dr put me on a prescription but even that didn’t help.
I wish I knew an answer for you!
Sorry.

The rules say that spicy and acidic (ex: citrus fruit) foods cause it. However, my experience has been that there aren’t any rules when it comes to pregnancy heartburn. I can eat a fairly plain cereal for breakfast and get heartburn, but then eat an orange later and not. On another day, neither of those foods bothers me and then next they might both.
You should experiment and figure out what foods cause heartburn for you personally and then avoid them.

Sometimes it does not matter what you eat. My mom in law had terrible heart burn and all she could eat were saltine crackers. It could be just another phase in your pregnancy.

I tried everything and the ONLY thing that got rid of my heartburn was giving birth. I had it bad with both my boys constantly, even during labor. Literally, as soon as the baby slid out I could feel it fade away.

I swear by the Gaviscon foaming tablets! =) Tums make me retch and gag so I discovered Gaviscon out of pure desperation!
As for food that cause less heartburn changes all the time. I used to eat Oatmeal to Go bars and those gave me wicked heartburn, but now they don’t. In fact my heartburn seemed to be worse 18-26 weeks..weird! I only get heartburn now if I overeat..like I did on sushi and tempura last week. UGH! I paid for that for two days of heartburn..LOL I feel fine again and am back to eating a regular size meal.
With my daughter I had it really bad..and she had TONS of hair, my son caused about half the heartburn and had half the hair my daughter did..LOL I can’t wait to see what this one has! =)
I drank GALLONS of skim milk with my daughter..I would drink it in the middle of the night too!

As others said cut back on Spicy, acid and fried greasy food. and juice and soda can cause heartburn.
**** Here is another way to help with controlling your heart burn. DAIRY!!! Milk, yogurt, can help calm the acid down.
*** Also when you lay down lay on your left side it raises your esophagus and helps keep the acid down as well.
